*Note: Starting, stopping, or transferring service can usually be done by the following business day after application of service is completed or following a request to stop or transfer service.

Our application for electric service requires your full name, complete address, place of employment, home and work telephone numbers, and social security number. The signing of the application must be witnessed and notarized by a notary public or it must be signed in our office in the presence of  one of our Customer Service Representatives in order to ensure the protection and verification of every DES customer.

In addition to a notarized application, the following items are required in order to apply for new service:

  • A valid, photo identification, such as a driver’s license or state issued I.D.
  • A copy of your lease or rental agreement, or proof of ownership of the property.
  • A security deposit. The security deposit is determined by the credit of the person obtaining service. We will run a credit check with Online Credit Services to determine this amount, ranging from $75 to $200. Security deposits may be paid by cash, money order, or check.

The above listed documentation, as well as the application for service (signed and notarized) must be received by our office prior to service being turned on for the new applicant.

There is a non-refundable $15.00 connection fee for new service. This fee will appear on your first bill.

Steps for Applying for New Construction Service:

  1. Complete the 9-1-1 Address Application (select from the counties listed below). *This is a required step to ensure that the property receives the correct 9-1-1 address, and all subsequent documents and applications will NOT be processed without an address assigned to your property from your county’s 9-1-1 Office .***Please follow instructions included on the form to submit your application to the correct County Government Office.***
    1. DICKSON CO. 
    2. CHEATHAM CO
    3. HICKMAN CO. 
  2. Complete our Engineering Application.
  3. Complete our Application for New Service. The signing of the application must be witnessed and notarized by a notary public or it must be signed in our office before one of our Customer Service employees to ensure the protection and verification of every DES customer.
  4. Provide proper identity verification and additional documents:
    1. A valid, photo identification, such as a driver’s license or state issued I.D.
    2. A copy of your lease or rental agreement, or proof of ownership of the property.
    3. A security deposit. The security deposit is determined by the credit of the person obtaining service. We will run a credit check with Online Credit Services to determine this amount, ranging from $75 to $200. Security deposits may be paid by cash, money order, or check.
  5. Pay any applicable service/connection charge(s).
  6. Sign a Right-of-Way Easement. You can find a right-of-way easement here. The signing of the application must be witnessed and notarized by a notary public or it must be signed in our office before one of our Customer Service employees to ensure the protection and verification of every DES customer.
  7. Person responsible for the electrical work must purchase all required electrical permits from and schedule inspections with the State of Tennessee. Click here to visit the DES Electrical Permits & Inspections page.

DES can install and turn on electric service within two to three weeks after satisfactory inspection has been performed by an authorized representative of the State of Tennessee.
